“LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT”

Popular Music — the Los Angeles/Melbourne-based duo of former Parenthetical Girls leader Zac Pennington and Australian composer Prudence Rees-Lee — is proud to present “Lifetime Achievement,” the debut single and video for the forthcoming album Minor Works, out October 13, 2023 via the group’s own Sanitarium Sound Services imprint.

Featuring the peerless rhythm section of Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier and celebrated composer Jherek Bischoff (David Byrne, Angel Olsen, Xiu Xiu), “Lifetime Achievement” begins in medias res — with our narrator braving the stage of some dismal awards ceremony. As the song’s cascade of novelistic imagery deepens, the picture transforms from pathetic to poignant, revealing that things may not be exactly as they appear.

Recalling Bob Fosse by way of Garth Marenghi, the single’s absurdist music video was shot and directed by Rees-Lee.

About Minor Works

The first new music since the release of 2020 debut Popular Music Plays Darkness — called “One of the year’s most inventive, hypnotic concept albums” by AV Club — Minor Works marks the group’s debut collection of original material, and the first Pennington-penned release in a decade. Recording across three continents, Minor Works’ ambitious productions were pieced together in sessions between Los Angeles, Melbourne, Moscow and New York — with percussion programming by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, contributions from Jherek Bischoff and Juliette Pearl Davis (Pearl & The Oysters), plus a 17-piece Russian chamber orchestra conducted over Zoom (no, really).
